Anne Chase
Anne grew up in the San Juan mountains and began backcountry skiing on Red Mountain Pass when she was 14. Her avalanche education formally began while in college in Squamish, British Columbia by taking a “Sociology of Skiing” course. Anne has pursued teaching avalanche education to make backcountry travel more accessible and welcoming for all – and to make it more fun! Anne has volunteered for Friends of the San Juans, instructed avalanche awareness hut-based courses for San Juan Sisters on Leadership Expeditions, and served as the instructor in training for SJE during the 2022/23 season. Earning her AIARE Instructor Training Course, Anne now teaches avalanche courses for SJE.
When she is not skiing, she is the Director of the Silverton Housing Authority and the Community Project Coordinator for San Juan Development Association. She is a founding artist of the Silverton Powerhouse Collective, is a (very) part-time artist and graphic designer, and a mostly-retired river guide.
